… A wedding poem

You will be my hero,
I’ll be your heroine and when the cat’s locked out at night,
you’ll get up and let her in.
You’ll bring me toast each morning,
and you’ll wake me with a kiss;
You’ll never (if you’re wise) say that my bum looks big in this.

You’ll really get the offside rule, not just say “Oh yes, dear”;

You’ll sit and watch the football, but still fetch me a beer.

You’ll cook my meals and iron my shirts and put them in the drawers,

And you won’t moan when I lose my comb, and quietly borrow yours.

You’ll pick up dead things from the path, and magic them away;

You’ll quietly take my shoes at night, and polish them each day.

And when we’re going out, you’ll never stand and roll your eyes

If I need an extra moment for my make-up, hair, and eyes.

You’ll gladly stand around in pubs, and laugh with all my friends,

And never tell the punchline before the joke I’m telling ends.

When I’ve had a drink or two at night, you’ll gladly take the wheel,

And never go ‘I told you so,’ however bad I feel.

Well …

You can tell that stuff to your friends, and I will do the same,

And we’ll laugh at it together, and treat it like a game.

But you bring my life a warmth and light I’ve never known

My love for you is deep within my heart, my soul, my bone.

I give you everything I am, and everything I do;

I’ll treasure all you give to me, because it comes from you.
